‘Lately’ is the first offering from: Eimhin’s forthcoming debut album, Modern Mending of the Heart. Created under the pressure of lived experience, this album will be a deeply honest exposition of what it takes to heal from the traumas of toxic love.
‘Lately’, the first single off the album, describes the experience of emerging from the depths of grief transformed for the better. The lyrics revealing a lesson hard-won and a sentiment that echoes across the entire record:
“That’s got to be it, you learn and you live, and the lesson is love, the lesson is love.”
From ethereal sad-folk to shout-it- at-the-top-of-your-lungs indie anthems, – Eimhin’s musical vocabulary is steeped in his cultural lineage of traditional Irish- balladry and is shaped by a youth devoted to punk rock, hardcore, glam and emo. Describing the experience of overcoming fear, depression and self-doubt, ‘Lately’ sees Eimhin radiating with the triumphant strength of having survived dark and difficult times to emerge a kinder, more empathetic human being.
“Lately is about looking inward and realising that love is powerful and that vulnerability is not weakness. I thought guarding myself emotionally protected me, but all I was doing was cutting myself off from the full experience of being alive, of being human.”
Through his unique fashion sensibilities and commitment to dismantling patriarchal norms, Eimhin takes up the mantle of artists such as Virgin Prunes, David Bowie and more recently Harry Styles in challenging audiences to let go of restrictive cultural ideas about gender expression and encouraging them to embrace their divine femininity.
“I am really inspired by the work of contemporary queer activists such as Alok Vaid-Menon who challenge us to question how cultural ideas about gender limit our capacity to thrive and be truly free. I believe that if you want to normalise something, you have to do it like it’s normal. ‘Lately’ is, in part, my attempt to be more intentional about how I show up in the world and how I use my art to advocate for a cause I’m passionate about. How I dress is the choice to wear that activism on my body too”
